Consumer Information

Local contaminant sources
Consumer information can have a significant impact on the selection and use of toxic chemicals. In some communities, it can be more effective than regulatory measures. Kwiaht has been preparing toxicity rankings for local consumers in the islands since 2008 in collaboration with the San Juan Nature Institute. Data from published sources were used to generate color-coded rankings of pesticides and herbicides. Original research is being pursued on the toxicity of alternative “natural” nonionic surfactants to local aquatic invertebrates.
